A carelessly discarded cigarette caused a smoke condition within a 63,000 sq. ft building in South Abington Township on Tuesday evening. Chinchilla Hose Company crews were dispatched to the PODS warehouse at 18:51 for a possible structure fire, with the building filling with smoke. The building currently houses PODS storage units in the north end and a recycling center operation in the south end of the structure. Engine 2-1 arrived on scene at 19:00 and reported nothing showing from the exterior. Car 2 (Connolly) arrived on scene one minute later and reported a light smoke condition inside the building and established command. Crews from Clarks Summit and Taylor Fire Departments assisted the Chinchilla Hose Company search out the cause of the smoke. Firefighters found the source of the smoke along a support beam in the building. Chief 2B (Grierson) determined the cause of the incident to be a carelessly discarded cigarette on a beam within the structure that had caused sawdust to begin to smolder along the beam. The PODS building formally housed a modular home business and saw dust had accumulated along the beams from past business operations. Crews used a pressurized water extinguisher to extinguish the burning debris and checked for extension along the walls. Finding no extension and after self venting the structure crews returned to service at 19:58. 1st Alarm: Car 2, Chief 2B, Engine 2, Engine 2-1, Rescue 2, Rescue 95, Ladder 4 Special Call: Ambulance 4-9 |
