Chinchilla Hose Company firefighters conducted their yearly fire prevention education program on Friday at the South Abington Elementary School. Over 260 children attended the two sessions held at the school.Firefighters talked about the importance of fire safety, emergency evacuation plans and smoke detectors among other fire related topics. Smokey Bear made a special guest appearance at both sessions. Smokey Bear (often unofficially referred to as Smokey the Bear) is a mascot of the United States Forest Service created to educate the public on the dangers of forest fires. Smokey Bear's message, "Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires," was created in 1944 by the Ad Council. In April 2001, Smokey's message was updated to "Only You Can Prevent Wildfires”.Smokey Bear lead the children with their teachers outside of the school to view the Chinchilla Hose Company Engine 2-1, Command Vehicle Car 2 and Ambulance 2-9. |
